AsEnglishhasbecomeincreasinglyimportantintheglobalizedworld,ithasalsobecomeacoresubjectinChina’sNationalCollegeEntranceExamination(NCEE).However,manyChinesestudentsstrugglewithEnglishlearningandexperiencedifficultiesintheNCEE.Inthisarticle,wewillexplorethechallengesfacedbyChinesestudentswhenlearningEnglishandtakingtheNCEE,andsuggestsomepossiblesolutions.
ChallengesofEnglishLearningforChineseStudents
EnglishlearninginChinaoftenfocusesongrammarandvocabulary,insteadofcommunicationskillsorculturalknowledge.ManystudentshaveonlylearnedEnglishinaclassroomsetting,withlimitedopportunitiestopracticespeakingorlistening.Thus,whenfacingEnglishlisteningandspeakingtestsinNCEE,studentsareoftenunderpreparedandstruggletounderstandtheaccentsandexpressionsusedinthetest.
AnotherchallengethatChinesestudentsfaceisthedifferencesinlanguagestructure.ChineseandEnglisharedrasticallydifferentintermsofgrammarandwordorder.ThismakesitdifficultforstudentstoexpresstheirthoughtsaccuratelyinEnglish,especiallywhentheyhavenotmasteredthebasicgrammarrulesinEnglish.
ChallengesofEnglishTestsinNCEEforChineseStudents
TheEnglishtestsinNCEEusuallyincludelistening,speaking,reading,andwritingparts.Thelisteningandspeakingpartsareoftenthemostchallenging,asstudentsdonothavesufficientpracticeopportunitiesandarenotfamiliarwiththeaccentsorvocabularyusedinthetests.Forthereadingandwritingparts,studentsmayhavedifficultieswiththemorecomplicatedvocabularyandsentencestructuresusedinthetestmaterials.Furthermore,thetimelimitforeachtestpartisstrict,whichaddstothepressurefacedbystudentsduringthetest.
SolutionstoImproveEnglishLearningandNCEEPerformanceforChineseStudents
Firstly,toimproveEnglishlisteningandspeakingskills,studentsneedtohavemoreopportunitiestopracticewithnativespeakersorexperiencedlanguageteachers.LanguageexchangeprogramsandextracurricularclubscanprovidesuchopportunitiesforstudentstocommunicateinEnglish.Secondly,teachersneedtoprovidestudentswithmorediversematerialstoenhancetheirunderstandingofEnglishlanguagerulesandusage.Additionally,studentscanrevisetheirgrammarthroughonlineresourcessuchasgrammar-checkingwebsitesorapps.Lastly,toperformbetterinNCEE,studentscanparticipateinmocktestsandpracticethedifferenttestpartswithinastricttimelimit,tosimulatetherealtestsituation.
Inconclusion,learningEnglishandperformingwellinNCEEischallengingformanyChinesestudents.However,withmorepracticeopportunities,exposuretodiversematerialsandteachingmethods,aswellaseffectivestrategiesforpreparingforthetest,studentscanovercomethesechallengesandimprovetheirEnglishlanguageproficiency.
